Spartan Golfers Swing for the Green at Regionals

The regional golf tournament Tuesday afternoon at Deer Creek Golf Course would be the last tournament of the season for the Thomas Jefferson golfers unless they were able to qualify for state. In order to qualify for the state tournament, a golfer must finish in the top four at regionals, which is no easy task. The task became even harder for the Spartans, as it didn’t take them long to realize how difficult the Deer Creek course was. The course, covered with water and impenetrable rough, caused Spartan players headaches all day and resulted in 34 lost balls. These costly mistakes left all of the TJ golfers with numerous penalty strokes and hindered the Spartans chances at qualifying for state.
The Spartans best chance for a state qualifier came in junior Andrew Knoll who played consistently throughout the day and finished with a round of 91. Knoll’s effort was about six shots off the pace of the final state qualifier, whose qualifying round in the mid-80’s demontrated the toughness of the Deer Creek course. The leader of the Spartan team coming into today’s tournament was senior Tyler Thornton, who had averaged a score of 79 throughout the season. Read more
Spartans Show Well at City Cup

Tyler Thornton leads the way for TJ boys’ golf.
The smell of the freshly cut grass and the warm sunny sky at the City Park Golf Course could make any of the golfers at the City Cup smile. However, that was not the only reason that Thomas Jefferson senior Tyler Thornton was grinning after his round on Tuesday. Thornton shot a round of 80 to finish 2nd overall and spark a solid Spartan effort in the city championship. "Of course I was a little dissapointed I didn’t win it, but overall I was happy with my effort," said Thornton, who came into the tournament averaging a score of 79 per round for the season and was ranked 1st in the city.
Thornton finished a stroke behind Jesse Gaas from Denver East, but the shot of the day belonged to the Thomas Jefferson senior. Thornton drove the green on the 14th hole, a 365 yard Par 4, and would eventually go on to make birdie. Also having a good round for the Spartans was sophmore Andrew Knoll who shot an 83 for the day. Following behind Knoll for the Spartans were brothers Colin and Kyle Freeland. Kyle, a freshman, shot a 93 in the tournament while older brother Colin, a senior, shot a 97. Read more
