Swimming Shows Well at City

TJ girls’ swimming takes third at the DPL championships.
by Marc Houghton

aswim.jpg    The Lady Spartan swimmers finished their season on a good note this weekend, taking third place at the City meet at Manual. Finishing behind the teams from Denver East and George Washington, the girls proved once again that they are among the top teams in Denver.
The meet started out well at the preliminaries on Friday night as TJ had at least one swimmer finish in the top twelve (only swimmers who finish twelfth or better make it back to swim in the finals on Saturday) in almost every event. The top placer after Friday night was Andrea Shacklock, who took third in the 100 yard freestyle. The Spartan 400 freestyle relay team also finished in third, and the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays were seated in fourth going into the finals on Saturday.
With East and GW competing closely for the top two spots, TJ and the team from Denver South were in a tight race for third. After the final scores were tallied, it was obvious that TJ had both more depth and talent than the Rebels. The top performers from the Spartans in the finals were Shacklock, who dropped even more time in her 100 freestyle, Hall Hupperts, who finished fifth in the 100 freestyle and swam in both the 200 freestyle and 200 Medley relays, and Catherine Piccone, who placed 5th in the 100 backstroke and also swam on two relays. Swimming for State

With every new season, TJ swimming strives to send more athletes to state.
by Marc Houghton

normal_hall_swimming2~0.jpg    In recent years, there has been plenty of coverage of the TJ swim team and their never ending quest to send more swimmers to the State meet.  All the hype about this one meet may seem overdone, but in reality it is the highest level of competition that high school swimmers will ever see.  The state meet is not only the most exciting event of the year in Colorado swimming, but it can help take some athletes to another level by providing an environment and situation to thrive in.

It is a big deal for a swimmer or a relay to make the state qualifying times, because they are designed to only take about thirty swimmers or teams in every event.  Just making one of the times is a big accomplishment, and places a swimmer among the best in Colorado.  Only a small percentage of high school swimmers get to participate in the state meet in their four years, and those who do will experience something to remember. TJ Takes Cowboys for Ride

Girls' swim past league opponent, West.

by Marc Houghton

normal_DSC_0727.JPG     The Lady Spartan swimmers completed another dominating performance Thursday, when they took on the West Cowboys at TJ, and came out with a landslide victory.  This victory brings the girls to 3-1 on the season in dual meets, with their only loss coming against George Washington.

The swimmers times' are dropping with every new meet, and the 200 free relay is coming closer to their goal of qualifying for the state meet.  Among the top performers against West was senior Catherine Piccone, who won the 500 freestyle and swam in two of the winning relays.  Junior Hall Hupperts also had a great meet, placing first in the 200 individual medley, and swimming in all three of the winning relays for the Spartans. TJ Swims Past Kennedy

TJ Girls' Swimming takes an easy victory over the Commanders.

by Marc Houghton

normal_hall_swimming2~0.jpg    The Lady Spartan swimmers finished their last meet before winter break with a dominating performance over the Commanders of Kennedy on Tuesday.  With this win, TJ moves to 2-1 in dual meets on the season after beating Montbello in their first meet and falling to George Washington in their second.

The girls started out the meet with an easy win in the 200 medley relay.  The winning team consisted of Sophmore Andrea Shacklock, and Seniors Catherine Piccone, Ryanne Mollo, and Alex Hurlbut.  The relay still has not met their goal of qualifying for the state meet, but with most of the season ahead of them they are hopeful that they can drop a couple of seconds to make the time.

One of the top performers of the meet was Catherine Piccone, who won the 500 freestyle as well as being a member of both of the winning relay teams.  Andrea Shacklock also had a good meet, winning the 100 freestyle, and coming very close to a state qualifying time in the 50 freestyle.

With four meets under their belt, the girls are getting into the groove of the season, and their times are getting closer to where they need to be to compete with teams from all over the city.  With three more dual meets against Denver West, Denver East, and Denver South, the girls have a good chance to show that they are among the best in the Denver Prep League.  They will be training hard over winter break, and will come into the new year ready to get some early wins.

The TJ girls’ swim team sets sights on State.

by Marc Houghton

normal_hall_swimming2~0.jpg    After a couple of successful years under Coaches Ono Piccone and Cindy Allen, the Lady Spartans' swim team hopes to improve once again in the upcoming season.  Led by a solid group of seniors and some talented underclassmen, the team has a chance to do some damage in the Denver Prep League.

A third place finish at the city meet last season behind DPS powerhouses George Washington and East proved that TJ was capable of competing against the best teams in the league.  This year the Spartans will be led by seniors Catherine Piccone, Ryan Mollo, Junior Hall Hupperts, and Sophomore Andrea Shacklock.  “We hope to send a couple of relay teams to state like we did last season, and these girls are going to be the key athletes in making the times,” said Coach Piccone. “We would like to send some girls to state in individual events also, and our large team is going to help us score points in our big meets.”   Fielding a group of about 25 swimmers and six divers, the team has grown in the past few seasons.
