Playoff Woes for the Lady Spartans
February 28, 2008
TJ girls' basketball isn't able to continue win streak against Fossil Ridge.
The girls basketball team played their first playoff game, and they were not able to pull out a win as they lost to a powerful team from Fossil Ridge, 64-37.
The Spartans seemed to be gaining off their momentous uprising at the end of the season where they won 4 out of their last 5 games. During this streak, they outscored, outrebounded, and outstole their opponents on a more then a two to one ratio. It seemed like they were able to finally come together as a team as the season came to an end, and they hoped to keep their momentum heading into the first round of the playoffs. Unfortunately, it seemed like this would not be the case, as the woes for the girls started early in the game.
The Spartans got out to a fast start, as they took the early lead on the Sabercats 6-0. It seemed like this would be another great occasion in which the ladies would be able to beat the odds and pull out another win. However, the first few minutes was only a bright spot for the Spartans, as their game soon after this point seemed to take Read more
Season Finale Extraordinaire
February 24, 2008
The Lady Spartans devastate the North Vikings.
The Lady Spartans ended their season on a high note as they defeated the North Vikings in a blowout, by a score of 74-17.
The Ladies devastated the Vikings in almost every category, from points to steals. The girls used the defeat that they sustained from the Montbello Warriors in their last game as a powerful motivator in this matchup. The Spartans came out ready to play, as they quickly put up 12 points on the Vikings before they could answer with a point of their own. It seemed as if the Spartans were always one step ahead of the Vikings and that they always knew where the ball was going. TJ had a record 18 steals and converted many of these opportunities into points of their own. The girls also scored 74 points, which beats their previous single game score by 25 points. Lastly, their defense seemed to be impenetrable, for the Vikings were only able to manage 17 points in the whole game. The Spartans ended their regular season with a bang, which can only mean that bright things are in store for this team next season.
The were able to get out of their early season slide by going 4 for 5 in their last 5 games. It took some time for the Lady Spartans to bond together as a team, but as the season progressed, you could see that they were slowly starting to improve in almost every aspect of their game. Towards the end of the season, there was nothing that could stop the Spartans, as both their defense and offense had a sudden explosion of talent. This game ends what turned out to be a successful season, and with their young talent and more experience the program looks to have even more success in the next few years.
Ups and Downs for the Spartans
February 22, 2008
A tough win comes with a tough loss for the Lady Spartans.
The Lady Spartans took on a tough team from South on Friday, February 15th and they were able to pull out their third win in a row by a score of 46-34.
The game was clearly a defensive battle, as both of the teams were held to very low scores. In the first half, both squads were severely limited in the points category. The Spartans made a total of 21 points and the Rebels were only able to put together 15. The lead proved to be just what the doctor ordered for the Spartans as their defense was able to hold off a late game rush by the Rebels. The girls looked to build off this three game win streak when another tough team from Montbello would come to town on Tuesday, February 20th.

Girls Pull Off a Close Win
February 7, 2008
Offensive and Defensive surge drives girls' basketball.
The Lady Spartans took on a powerful team from West on Tuesday, and were able to pull out their second win of the season, 44-39.
The girls were looking forward to this game after their tough defeat against Kennedy last week. You could feel the intensity in the air as the Spartans stepped out onto the court. The Cowboys have gotten the better of TJ over the past few years, taking wins for the past three seasons. However,as the game started, it looked as if the Spartans were ready to break away from this old tradition.
The defense for the Spartans looked like they were ready for anything, as they started the game out with consecutive steals and back-to-back lay ups. TJ's defense showed that they had come to play and weren’t going away without a fight. The team continued to hold strong throughout the entire game by allowing only 39 points, the least of the entire season. Read more
Close Call Against Kennedy

Offensive Struggles for Spartan girls.
by Keenan Moore
The Lady Spartans took on a powerful Kennedy Commanders team and they were not able to pull out a win as they lost 52-39.
This game proved to be one of the closest games that the Lady Spartans have played all season. The two teams started off going back and forth with basket coming after basket. The Spartan defense continued to hold strong, which kept the Commanders to a below 50% field goal percentage. It looked like the defense was ready to bring the goods to the table, and they were hoping for their offense to put the Commanders away.
The Spartan offense, however, could not seem to really find their rhythm as they too were held to below a 50% field goal percentage. There were still bright points in the game as the Spartans tried to make a late game comeback with consecutive three-pointers, but the Commander lead would never be diminished as they were able to answer the Spartan threes with a 10-0 run.
This setback hasn’t gotten the Spartans down though, as they are looking to improve throughout the rest of their league games. They'll take on West Cowboys on Tuesday at 7:00 at West.
East Dominates Spartans

Fast break too much for the TJ girls.
by Keenan Moore
The lady Spartans took on a powerful team from East and they weren’t able to pull out a win, as they lost 63-40.
This was the start of the league schedule for the Spartans, as the rest of their season will consist of teams from the Denver Prep League. The Spartans seemed ready to play as the boys’ game ended and they came out to the court. The scene seemed set, as the Spartans were to play one of their first games of the season at Manual’s Thunder dome. As the first few minutes of the game played out, the contest went back and forth between the two teams and continued that way until the first quarter ended with the two teams having a tie score 12-12. However, the second half was a different story as the Angels got the better of the Spartans. The scoring was one-sided as the Angels almost doubled the score of the Spartans, 32-18.
The second half seemed to show some promise for the Spartans as they came out firing and put a quick six points up on the board. However, for whatever the Spartans put on the board the Angels were able to match it, and then some. The Angels proved that they were worthy of their high ranking in 5A. The fast break was once again the major culprit in this game. It seemed like the Angels were able to run up and down the court with ease. The Angels proved to be too much for the Spartans in the end, despite a late comeback by the TJ girls.
The Spartans head over to Kennedy to take on the Commanders this Friday at 7:00.
Patriots Too Much For Spartans

18-2 run in Second Quarter Puts Game Out Of Reach.
by Keenan Moore
The Spartan girls started their league play on Friday as they took on George Washington and they were not able to pull out a win as they lost 67-43.
The Spartans started out strong as they pulled out to an early lead as they made the first six points of the game. It seemed that the Spartans were ready for the challenge that the Patriots had proven to be over the past couple of years. The first quarter ended with the Spartans holding to a three-point lead, 15-12.
The second quarter started with the Spartans scoring a quick two baskets and continuing their lead 19-14. However, the Patriots seemed to rebound strongly and went on an 18-2 run in the second quarter. The second quarter ended with the Patriots taking the lead from the Spartans, 30-17.
The second half has proven to be disastrous for the Spartans, but there was always a possibility for them to mount a comeback. They started out strong, as they were able to score a quick basket, followed by a three pointer. However, they were not able to pull it together, as the Patriots seemed to have an answer for everything the Spartans threw at them. The Patriots were always able to get points off of the fast break. The Spartan defense is critical to success of the team and they will need it as they head off to play the DPS juggernaut East tomorrow at 7:00.
Mustangs Too Much for Spartans

Girls' basketball is beaten by Ralston Valley.
by Keenan Moore
The Lady Spartans took on a powerful Ralston Valley team Tuesday night, and they weren’t able to pull out a win as they lost 62-27.
The Spartans decided to stick with the zone defense that had proven to be productive against some of their other opponents. It seemed like the defense was going to be able to stop the powerful Mustang offense. As the first quarter came to a close, the zone defense was keeping the mustangs at bay, as the score was 15-10 Ralston Valley. This proved that the zone that they had been working on had had some effect on the Mustangs. However, as soon as the second quarter started, the floodgates opened up, and the points for the Mustangs kept on coming. At the start of the third quarter, they had almost doubled TJ's score. A Close Finish Against Bear Creek
December 13, 2007
TJ Girls' Basketball falls in a close game against the Bears.
The Spartan gilrs basketball team hosted the Bear Creek Bears Wednesday night, and while showing a valiant effort, were not able to pull out a win as they lost 47-30.
The girls started out strong yet again as they took an early 4-0 lead. The game started out great for TJ, and looked like it could be the night the Spartans would be able to hold out for the entire game. While the girls continued to put up the points, the Bears started to put up some scoring of their own. At one point there was only a two point differential between the two teams, but towards the end of the second half, the Bears put up three consecutive three pointers and took a 27-18 lead.
At the start of the third quarter, the TJ girls quickly sank two baskets and closed the lead to 27-24. Unfortunately this is as close as they would get, as the Bears started to pull away with the game. Although they ended up with the loss, the TJ girls are taking away some positive points from the game. Their defense was strong throughout the entire game and they were able to steal the ball on multiple occasions. This was the best performance from the girls so far this year. The team will be carrying a lot of motivation going into their next game against Moffat County at TJ on Tuesday at 4:30.
Spartans Fall to the Gladiators
December 5, 2007
TJ Girls' Basketball takes their second loss at the hands of Widefield.
The TJ girls' basketball team looked to respond after their loss to Longmont, as they took on the team from Widefield on Tuesday night at TJ .
The ladies took a four point lead early, and it looked like there was the smell of a upset in the air. They continued to play strong, and their defense proved to be one of the major factors in the game. The Gladiators came back strong in the second quarter though, outscoring the Spartans by eight points. Widefield took the lead into half time by a score of 32-15.
As in their first game, it was time for the Spartans to climb out of a major hole. The Spartans came out firing, and were able to climb out of the hole for a short amount of time. They came within five points, but that would be as close as they would get. The defense began to crumble, and the points started to add on to the already huge lead. The starting center Andrea Qualls showed a lot of effort all game, but fouled out with six minutes left. The girls from Widefield started to pull away with the game and the final score left TJ with a record of 0-2, losing by a score of 52-28. Read more
