Dramatic performance leads TJ past East.

The Thomas Jefferson wrestling team went into their match against the East Angels on Thursday with high hopes.
The Spartans had not won a city title in wrestling since the 1995 season, and had never gone undefeated in league play. In fact, just three years ago the Spartans had finished last place in league following the unexpected death of Coach Luke Graham. Now the Spartans were looking to cement their place as a power in the Denver Prep League.
Going into the dual against the Angels the Spartans were undefeated in the Denver Prep League this year and on the verge of a perfect league season. “Our coach told us before the dual that we had a great chance to beat this team, and to go out there with confidence and wrestle to our abilities,” said Senior Michael Hawkins.
The Spartans started off strong when Hawkins forced his competitor to withdraw with an injury, and Evan Duran pinned his opponent. TJ also came up with crucial pin-falls from Alec Groditski, Matt Francis, and Robert McMacken. However, the Angels would not go down without a fight, and brought the score to 36-35 going into the final match.
This meant that the Spartans' hopes rested on the shoulders of Senior Justin Tara, who was more than ready to accomplish the task. “It was a little closer than I expected, and I knew coming into the final match that City was on the line. I was excited because I have been in that position several times before and I knew there would be no better way to end it,” Tara said. Tara pinned his opponent in the 1st period to bring TJ a 42-35 victory and the City Championship.
“It was a dream come true,” said Tara. “After the match I went up to Mike (Hawkins) and gave him a big hug. It was awesome to celebrate with my teammates, because winning City has been our goal since the beginning of the season.”
The win was memorable for everyone involved, including Head Coach Mike Laurita. “I am proud of all of the kids. I have won city titles before in other leagues, but this one is definitely special. It has been great to see the program develop from where it was to where it is today,” said Laurita.
The Spartans will not have much time to savor their victory, as they compete in the Mile High Classic this Saturday at TJ.
