Softball Grinds Out a Win
September 18, 2007
The softball girls move their win streak to four.
If there are three things Head Softball Coach Kyler Jackson has wanted all year, it is for his softball girls to come out and hit the ball, get runs, and make outs. On Saturday September 15, the Lady Spartans did just that.
The Spartans took their three game winning streak to Sand Creek High School to take on the 4-5 Scorpions and the bat of Melissa Sandoval. The girls started off slowly and fell behind 2-1 after the second inning. The Scorpions drove across two more runs to make the score 4-1, and with the way Sand Creek's pitcher Terri Carter was throwing, things didn't look good for the TJ nine.
However, in the fourth inning the Lady Spartan bats came alive when a single by Amanda Weaver sparked a Spartan comeback. A double from catcher Lucy Bell drove in Weaver to make the score 4-2. TJ added two more as Aryn Grywusiwicz, who went 4-5 on the day, helped herself out with a triple that scored Bell and Kelly Hill. Sand Creek was finally able to get out of the inning striking out sophomore standout Morgan Bertram.
As the Spartans took the field and the momentum was swinging their way, the Scorpions struck quickly when Sandoval hit a double, scoring two runs and making it 4-6 after the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Bell hit a home run with a runner on third to tie the game at six. Grywusiwicz then took over on the mound, and with ten strikeouts for the second game in a row, she held the Scorpions scoreless for the rest of the game. The Spartans, however, were not done hitting. They established seven more runs through the next three innings, including an inside the park homerun by Ashley Lowery.
The Spartans clearly were the dominant team Saturday, despite falling behind early. The girls are one game under .500 and on a four game winning streak, as they will face the West Cowboys to try to continue their winning ways.
