Softball Girls Give Great Effort in Loss

The TJ softball nine falls to 5A Monarch.
The Lady Spartans softball season hasn’t started the way they expected, but with hard work and effort they hope to turn it around. Last night was no exception as the girls' softball team gave a valiant effort, taking on a powerful Monarch team. TJ quickly fell behind, trailing 0-10 after the first inning. Aryn Grywusiewicz started on the mound for the Spartans and pitched better than the score appeared. “Aryn pitched pretty good for us against a good team, we just made too many mistakes in the field,” said senior first baseman Amanda Weaver.
A quick hit by Monarch's leadoff hitter Brianna Rios followed by a bunt for a hit by Nicola Jones put runners at first and second with no outs. The next Monarch batter, Amy Christopher was able to hit a single between short and third bringing in their first run. The onslaught continued throughout the first inning, but four errors didn't help the Lady Spartans get out of the jam. The Spartans were finally able to get three outs when shortstop Collette Hernandez executed a beautiful double play. The bases were loaded and a short pop fly was hit her way, but head coach Kyler Jackson called a play where she intentially misses the ball and tags the runner at second for one out, and then touches the bag for the double play.
The game slowed down as the Lady Spartans started to make the necessary plays and eliminated the errors. Grywusiewicz settled down and started to get outs, while she helped herself, hitting for a double in the third. TJ was finally able to get a run across when senior catcher Lucy Bell hit a solo shot in the fourth inning. Lauren Kelsch and Kelly Hill were both walked to score the Spartans' final two runs, and to make the final score 3-13. “It was a tough game and we made too many mistakes to give us a chance to win,” Weaver said. “I’m proud of the team for not giving up, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
